The elevated heart-rate response appeared after an aerobic-tempo session and a quality workout earlier the same day. Similar power produced a much lower physiological response after recovery.
Recovery—not aerobic power—was probably limiting the second session.
The power target made the evening ride look easy, but the rider’s internal response suggested that the accumulated load was still high. Looking only at watts would have hidden that signal.
This is an inference from ride summaries, not a definitive diagnosis. Temperature, hydration, sleep, subjective effort, heart-rate sensor accuracy and second-by-second cardiac drift were unavailable.
On the next double-training day, begin the second ride at a familiar easy power. Compare heart rate and perceived effort with the rider’s normal response. If both remain clearly elevated after the warm-up, shorten the session or turn it into true recovery. Repeat the comparison across the next two similar days.

How to analyze patterns across your rides
The useful question is not whether one ride looked good or bad. It is whether comparable rides reveal a recurring signal that can support one testable next step.

One ride can be distorted by route, weather, fatigue, fueling, or pacing. Start with rides that served a similar purpose, then look for a signal that repeats.

Compare sequence, intensity, duration, frequency, recovery, heart-rate response, speed or pace, and power when available. Consistency across rides is stronger evidence than one unusual workout.

Use the data you already have
Ride history, heart rate, duration, frequency, and speed or pace can provide useful signals. Power is optional and adds depth when available; missing metrics should remain unavailable.

Separate evidence from interpretation
State what the rides show, what that may mean, how uncertain the inference is, and which recommendation follows. A likely limiter is not an exact diagnosis.

Choose one practical experiment, keep the rest of the comparison as stable as possible, and ask what else could explain the result before drawing a conclusion.
